Keep your humor, please. ‘Cause don’t you know it’s time like these that Laughing Matters most of all!
Hawaiʻi ArtSpace is tickled pink to announce their first fully staged musical: Howard Crabtree’s When Pigs Fly — conceived by Howard Crabtree and Mark Waldrop, with book and lyrics by Waldrop and music by Dick Gallagher.
Directed and choreographed by multi‑award‑winner Miles Phillips and featuring dazzling costumes by veteran Broadway designer James Corry, this beloved OBIE, Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, and Outer Critics Circle Award‑winning musical revue finally makes its long‑awaited flight across the Pacific, landing at Palikū Theatre October 2.
When Pigs Fly opens in flashback, with young Howard paying a visit to his high‑school guidance counselor, Miss Roundhole. Fresh from play practice — and still clad in his fanciful Dream Curly costume — Howard asks if she can picture his dream of puttin’ on a show: making funny costumes, singing and dancing alongside “all the other Dream Curlies.”
Miss Roundhole assures him that yes… she can absolutely see it — WHEN PIGS FLY!
From that moment on, When Pigs Fly launches into a joyful, over‑the‑top musical revue about imagination, resilience, and the sheer audacity it takes to insist on making art in a world that keeps suggesting more “practical” options. Overflowing with wit, heart, and glittering theatrical flair, the show celebrates the creative spirit at its most playful and persistent.
Inspired by Crabtree’s love of legendary designer Bob Mackie — whose iconic blend of glamour and visual humor helped define The Carol Burnett Show — the costumes are a show unto themselves. Crabtree’s designs, once embraced by Mackie in a New York revival, are reimagined yet again for Hawaiʻi ArtSpace by James Corry, and they are, in every sense of the word, FABULOUS.
With delightful new topical lyrics written especially for this Hawaiʻi production by Mark Waldrop, When Pigs Fly is a sparkling reminder that laughter isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. A celebration of creativity, courage, and the simple joy of putting on a show, it invites audiences of all kinds to dream big, laugh often, and maybe even believe that pigs really can fly.
