Howard Crabtree’s
When Pigs Fly

When Pigs Fly is a musical revue in the style of the Ziegfeld Follies and other great showbiz traditions, filtered through an LGBTQ+ lens. All the characters are somewhere on the LGBTQ+ spectrum, but as long as the actors are comfortable presenting as queer, actual sexuality won’t be a factor — best actor for the role. Every role requires great comic chops and the ability to play everything from touching drama to high camp.

Production Dates
Music/Dance/Costume fittings begin early July. Full rehearsal schedule begins late July.

Opening Friday, October 2nd to kick off Hawaiʻi’s Pride Month. Four performances that weekend, with the possibility of extending the run for another weekend.

Cast Breakdown

All Male/Male Presenting cast of five. ALL ethnicities and physical types. All great singers and comedians who at least move well. Each of the five cast members plays about a dozen roles. There are NO small parts.

Everyone plays a variety of comic characters — men, women, mythical creatures, animals, and inanimate objects. The show is built around the elaborate costumes with a fair amount of costume & wig-based drag and a ton of quick changes — but every cast member has his time in the spotlight to stand center stage and sell a song.

Man 1 (Howard Crabtree): Sweet, wholesome, idealistic Howard dreams of becoming a big Broadway performer and costume designer. Haunted by flashbacks of his less than encouraging High School guidance counselor while trying to mount a musical revue extravaganza.

Sings “When Pigs Fly”, “Hawaiian Wedding Day”, and “Over The Top”.

Tenor. Moves well. 20s–30s

Man 2: Song and dance man and gym bod. Sings the Vaudeville style dance duo “Light in the Loafers” and plays a variety of hyper-masculine roles including Adam (of Biblical fame) and a Centaur who doesn’t know he’s a Centaur in the very funny song “Not All Man”.

Baritone. Dancer. Athletic, Muscular Build. 20s–30s.

Man 3: Broad comedian and comic foil to Howard. Plays a wide range of over-the-top comic characters. Challenges Howard about the logic of the show and complains about his elaborate costumes. Sings the hilarious “Tomorrow is Another Day”.

Baritone. Moves well. 30s–50s.

Man 4: Witty, campy, and skilled comedian capable of turning from high camp to heartbreaking pathos on a dime. Sings “These Days it’s Tough To Be a Fairy”, the three comic “Torch Songs”, and the deeply moving ballad “Laughing Matters”.

Bass/Baritone. Moves well. 20s–40s. Roller-skating a plus.

Man 5: Song and dance man. Sings and dances in the dance duo “Light in the Loafers”, “I’ve Got a Hunch I’m in Love” as Quasimodo, and the vampy Mae West style song “Bigger is Better”.

Tenor (Broadway/Pop), strong high, brassy belt. Dancer. 20s–40s.
All body types encouraged.
